Seasonal Driving Safety in Ontario: Winter, Rain, Night, and Summer Heat

Four driving conditions cause most of the trouble on Ontario roads, and each one needs a different technique. Here is what changes about grip, stopping distance, and visibility in winter, rain, darkness, and summer heat, from technicians who see the results.

Quick answer

The single technique that helps in every bad condition is more following distance. Go from the dry-road standard of 2 to 3 seconds to 4 seconds in heavy rain and 8 to 10 seconds on snow or ice. Everything else is condition-specific: winter needs the right compound below 7°C, rain needs tread depth and no cruise control, night needs clean glass and aimed headlights, and summer heat needs correct tire pressure.

Most of what makes a season dangerous is not the weather itself. It is that drivers keep using dry-road habits after the road has stopped behaving like a dry road. The car gives very little warning that grip has dropped until you ask for grip you no longer have.

This guide breaks the year into the four conditions that actually change how a vehicle behaves in Ontario, what each one does to your tires and brakes, and the specific adjustments worth making. None of it is complicated. It is mostly about knowing which margin to widen.

The one number that changes everything: 7 degrees

Before the seasons, understand the threshold that governs them. At around 7°C, the rubber compound in an all-season or summer tire begins to stiffen. A stiffer tire conforms less to the road surface, and less conformity means a smaller effective contact patch and longer stopping distances, on dry pavement as well as snow.

Winter compounds are formulated with more natural rubber and silica so they stay pliable in the cold. That is why winter tires help on a dry, cold January morning and not only in a snowstorm. It is also why leaving winter tires on through a warm May wears them out quickly on hot pavement.

Winter: everything takes longer

Snow and ice do not make a vehicle uncontrollable. They make every input take longer to produce a result, and drivers run out of road while waiting.

  • Stretch your following distance to 8 to 10 seconds. This is the highest-value change on this page. On packed snow, stopping distance can be several times what it is on dry pavement.
  • Make one input at a time. Brake, then turn. Turn, then accelerate. Combining braking with steering asks the tire for grip in two directions at once, which is exactly when it lets go.
  • Be smooth with everything. Gentle throttle, gradual braking, unhurried steering. Abrupt inputs break traction.
  • Bridges, overpasses, and ramps freeze first. They lose heat from above and below. Treat them as icy even when the road leading up to them is clear.
  • Watch for black ice at dawn and dusk. Pavement that looks wet when it is below zero probably is not wet. If spray stops coming off the vehicle ahead of you but the road still looks glossy, that is your warning.
  • Do not use cruise control. It can apply throttle mid-slip.
  • All-wheel drive helps you go, not stop. AWD distributes power to get moving. It does nothing for braking or cornering grip, and it gives many drivers false confidence. Four winter tires do more for winter safety than AWD on all-seasons.

Clear the whole vehicle before moving, not just a porthole in the windshield. Snow left on the roof slides onto your own glass under braking and onto the vehicle behind you at speed.

Rain: the first fifteen minutes are the worst

Rain is more dangerous at the start of a shower than during a downpour. Oil, rubber dust, and grime that have built up on the pavement lift and float before the rain washes them away, making the surface unusually slick for the first ten to fifteen minutes.

Hydroplaning happens when a tire cannot channel water out from under the contact patch fast enough and rides up on a film of water. Three factors control it: water depth, speed, and tread depth. You control two of them.

Tread depth is the part most drivers ignore. Ontario regulations set a minimum of 1.5 mm for passenger vehicles, but wet performance degrades long before that. Water evacuation falls off noticeably once you are down around 3 to 4 mm, which is why many technicians, ours included, recommend replacing well before the legal floor. Worn wiper blades and a nearly empty washer reservoir turn a manageable rain into a visibility emergency the first time a truck throws spray at you. Both are cheap to fix.

Night: you cannot outdrive your headlights

A large share of serious collisions happen after dark, and the reason is simple geometry. Low beams light roughly the distance you cover in a few seconds at highway speed, so at speed you are effectively driving into a space you have not yet seen.

  • Clean the glass, inside and out. The interior film on a windshield is what turns oncoming headlights into starbursts. Clean headlight lenses too. Hazed, yellowed lenses can cut light output dramatically, and restoring or replacing them is one of the cheapest safety upgrades available.
  • Look to the right edge line when a vehicle approaches. Using the white line as a reference keeps you positioned without staring into oncoming glare.
  • Dim your dash. A bright instrument cluster keeps your eyes adapted to close-up brightness and shrinks how far you can see down the road.
  • Use high beams whenever you legally can on unlit rural roads, and drop them well before you meet anyone.
  • Watch the shoulders for eyes. Deer are most active at dawn and dusk, and where there is one there is usually another. Brake hard and stay in your lane rather than swerving into oncoming traffic.
  • Treat fatigue as impairment. The dangerous window is roughly midnight to 6 a.m. Coffee does not fix it. Stopping does.

Fog and whiteout: the two conditions where you should stop

Most bad weather is a matter of adjusting technique. Fog and whiteout are different, because they remove the information you need to make any adjustment at all.

  • Low beams only. High beams reflect off fog and snow and reduce what you can see. Use fog lights if the vehicle has them.
  • Use the right edge line as your guide. Following the tail lights ahead pulls you along at their speed, which may be far too fast, and it removes your own reference to the road.
  • Open a window and listen. When visibility collapses, hearing gives you traffic information your eyes cannot.
  • If you have to stop, get fully off the road. Stopping in a live lane in a whiteout is how multi-vehicle pileups start. Pull well onto the shoulder or into an exit, then turn on hazards.
  • Consider not going. Ontario’s 511 service reports current road conditions and closures. In a squall off the lakes, waiting an hour is a complete solution to a problem that has no driving technique.

Spring: the season that damages the car

Spring is the safest season to drive and the hardest on the vehicle. Freeze-thaw cycles open potholes faster than crews can fill them, and a winter’s worth of road salt is still sitting in every seam.

  • Potholes cause alignment damage you will feel as a pull or as uneven wear. If the steering wheel is off-centre after a hard hit, or the car drifts on a flat road, book an alignment before the tires get chewed. Misalignment can ruin a tire edge in weeks.
  • Bent rims are common and easy to miss. A new vibration at highway speed after pothole season is usually a bent wheel or a thrown balance weight. A proper rebalance sorts most of it, but a bent rim will not balance out no matter how much weight goes on, so have the wheel inspected rather than repeatedly reweighted.
  • Check for sidewall bulges after any hard impact. A bulge means internal cords have broken. That tire must come off the vehicle, and it cannot be repaired.
  • Wash the underbody. Salt keeps working on brake lines, fuel lines, and subframes long after the roads are dry.
  • Do not leave winter tires on into the heat. Warm pavement wears soft winter compounds quickly, and you will be buying a new winter set a year early for the privilege.

Summer: heat is harder on tires than cold

Summer feels like the safe season, and in terms of grip it usually is. The risk shifts to the equipment.

Air pressure rises as temperature rises, and hot pavement plus highway speed builds heat inside the tire. A tire that is under-inflated is the problem case: the sidewall flexes more than it was designed to, that flex generates heat, and heat is what causes highway blowouts. The failures we see in July are almost always chronic under-inflation, not overheating of a properly inflated tire.

  • Check pressure monthly and before any long trip, in the morning before driving, when the tires are cold. Use the number on the driver’s door jamb placard, never the maximum stamped on the sidewall. See the correct pressure guide.
  • Do not bleed air out of hot tires. The reading is high because they are hot. Let them cool and set them properly.
  • Inspect sidewalls for cracking and bulges before road trip season. A bulge is a broken internal cord and the tire needs to come off the vehicle.
  • Do not overload for the cottage run. A fully loaded vehicle with roof cargo may need the higher pressure listed for full-load conditions on the placard.
  • Cooling system and battery. Heat kills more batteries than cold does, cold just exposes them. Summer is when a marginal battery quietly finishes dying.

The seasonal service that actually matters

Two appointments a year cover most of it. In the fall, the winter changeover is the natural moment to have brakes, battery, wipers, and lights checked, because everything that is marginal in October fails in January. In the spring, the changeover back is when to catch winter’s damage: pothole-induced alignment problems, bent rims, and the vibration that shows up as a balancing issue.

When should I book seasonal service in the GTA?
