Oil Change Guide: When and How to Change Your Engine Oil

Why regular oil changes are critical, when to schedule one, and what to expect from the service.

Engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It lubricates moving parts, dissipates heat, prevents corrosion, and traps contaminants like dirt and metal shavings. Over time and through repeated heat cycles, oil breaks down and loses its ability to protect your engine effectively.

A regular oil change is the single most important maintenance task you can perform on your vehicle. Skipping oil changes leads to sludge buildup, accelerated engine wear, decreased fuel economy, and ultimately premature engine failure — repairs that can easily cost more than the vehicle is worth.

The good news is oil changes are quick, affordable, and protect tens of thousands of dollars worth of mechanical investment. Most vehicles need an oil change every 5,000 to 10,000 km depending on the type of oil used and your driving conditions.

Key Tips

  • Park your vehicle on a level surface and let the engine cool to a safe temperature before starting any oil-related work.
  • Locate the oil drain plug under the engine and place a drain pan beneath it.
  • Remove the drain plug carefully and allow all the old oil to fully drain — this can take 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Replace the oil filter — never reuse an old filter even if it looks clean. A new filter is cheap insurance.
  • Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer if required, torqued to manufacturer specification.
  • Add the correct grade and quantity of fresh oil through the oil filler cap on top of the engine.
  • Run the engine for 30 seconds, then check the dipstick and top up if needed.
  • Reset the oil-life monitor in your dashboard if your vehicle has one.
  • Always recycle used oil — most auto parts stores accept it free of charge.

Benefits of Proper Maintenance

  • Extended engine life by 50,000 km or more
  • Better fuel economy from reduced internal friction
  • Lower risk of catastrophic engine failure
  • Reduced harmful emissions
  • Maintained warranty coverage on newer vehicles

Service Interval

Every 5,000 km for conventional oil; every 8,000-10,000 km for synthetic
